Bunions

Bunions appear on the side of the metatarsal area beside the big toe. They are an enlargement of the bone which becomes prominent making the foot wider. The big toe turns towards the second toe, presses against it, overlaps it or goes under it. Bunions are more frequent with women because they tend to use more constrictive shoes more often e.g. high heeled shoes. Bunions can also be a hereditary condition.

Treatment

  • Use shoes that are not constrictive at the toe area. Also avoid using high heeled shoes.
  • Use bunion cushions which protect the bunion from rubbing and pressure and so help with the pain.
  • Use toe separators, products that are placed between your toes, to correct the position of misaligned toes.
  • Use arch supports and arch supporting insoles to shift your weight towards the outside of your foot, thereby taking the pressure off the bunion and helping with the pain.
