Hammer toes

Hammer toes result from a muscular imbalance or overly tight tendons which make the toe turn downwards into a hooked position. Most commonly it is found in the toe beside the big toe as a result of bunions where the big toe has turned under the toe beside it. Hammer toes however can be found on all the toes from the 2nd to the 5th. Hammer toes can be very painful and the pain usually increases when walking. Painful corns may also develop on the toes as a result of hammer toes. Other conditions that cause hammer toes are high foot arches, flat feet and very long 2nd toes (toe beside the big toe).

Treatment

  • Use shoes that are not constrictive at the toe area. Also avoid very tight socks especially at the toe area.
  • Use special toe straighteners or toe crests which are very effective. Toe separators also help to realign your toes.
  • Use special gel insoles to cushion your foot and take the pressure off your toes or insoles that support the foot arch which shift your weight towards the outside of your foot.
  • To prevent the development of corns, you may use foot lotions and creams to soften your feet. For corns care, see the instructions.
