Pronation

Pronation is a normal movement of the foot where the foot cushions the impact of the foot hitting the ground. Normally the outside of the heel is the first part of the foot to hit the ground. Thereafter, the foot starts rolling forward and inward when the foot of the arch stretches and the walking or running motion continues. The shock absorbing function of pronation is a normal and an important function of the foot. However, sometimes the foot rolls inwards too much which is called overpronation. Overpronation may develop from exertion of the feet or from wearing shoes that do not have proper arch support.

Overpronation may lead to a collapse of the arch of the foot. When this happens, the foot might start turning outwards at the ankle which causes stress to the joints, tendons and muscles. Lower back problems and more serious foot problems may emerge if excessive pronation is left untended.

The most common symptoms of overpronation are pain and swelling in the ligament that runs along the sole of the foot, difficulties in walking, outwards twisting feet and pain in the ankles, foot arches, knees and lower back.

Treatment

  • Use arch supporting insoles and arch supports to shift your weight towards the outside of your foot.
  • Use shoes that support your foot arch and shift the position of your foot so that less pressure is directed to the inside of your foot and more to the outside.
  • Avoid using high heeled shoes.
