Heel spur

Heel spurs are the result of incorrectly functioning feet. They develop as a result of an inflammation in the ligament that runs along the sole of the foot (plantar fasciitis). As a result of this inflammation, a bony spur develops on the heel bone which is called a heel spur. However, the pain in the heel is not actually usually caused by the heel spur but plantar fasciitis. The most common symptom of heel spurs and plantar fasciitis is pain in the sole of the foot when getting up from bed in the morning.

Treatment

  • Use heel cushions and supports to cushion your heels.
  • Use arch supports and arch supporting insoles to shift the position of your foot so that less pressure is directed to the inside of your foot and more to the outside.
  • Use shoes that support your foot arch and shift the position of your foot so that less pressure is directed to the inside of your foot and more to the outside.
  • Use cold bandages to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Contact your foot care specialist for more detailed advice on exercise and physical therapy.
